Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) & Accreditation
The Department of Medical Education is committed to the success and well-being of our students. Rooted in our commitment to excellence, we have created a process to continually assess and monitor our educational programs. This process requires review and assessment of our learning environment, educational programs, and the climate created by Icahn School of Medicine students and faculty.
Our goal is to continually challenge ourselves to identify and implement systems, practices, and policies that enable us to provide high quality medical education to our students, a rigorous and supportive environment for our faculty to grow and succeed, and a climate that is student-centered.
The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), is an oversight agency comprised of members of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Medical Association (AMA), and representatives of U.S. and Canadian medical schools. The LCME accreditation is a voluntary, peer-reviewed process of quality assurance that determines whether the medical education program meets established standards. To achieve and maintain accreditation, a medical education program must meet the accreditation criteria by complying with all standards and elements set forth by the LCME.
Since 2014, the Medical Education Performance Assessment Committee has provided the central oversight of this effort. Our focus on the organization, structure, function, and systems that make up our educational program for the MD degree allows us to integrate a continuous quality improvement approach to compliance. The committee is comprised of smaller groups that are targeted to specific areas such as Curriculum and Student Affairs, Diversity, Admissions and Enrollment Services.
This Accreditation page will house up to date communications about our accreditation process and will provide periodic updates on the committees work and action.
