Since our last updates, RBI’s Guiding Coalition of Change Leaders focused their energy on five key actions to get us closer to the vision of becoming a health professions school providing healthcare and education that is free of racism and bias.

Action #1: Conducted a Deeper Dive

Each sphere hosted two interactive sessions with stakeholders across the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) to:

  1. Look at their sphere through different lenses and provide a way to talk about the experiences we each have of what is happening in the sphere and
  2. Conduct a power analysis to further understand how power works in our institution and in our social relationships.

Action #2: Developed Change Targets

Each sphere developed a change target or broad statement (goal) about the long-term expectation of what should change OVER THE NEXT YEAR as a result of the change effort. This target serves as a foundation for developing objectives and guides the plan for implementation. Check out RBI’s six change targets.

Action #3: Identified Objectives

For each change target, we identified multiple objectives or brief statements describing the short-term result to be achieved and the manner in which they will be achieved.

Each objective is SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

Action #4: Planned for Implementation

In order to achieve our objectives and change targets for this year, each sphere developed a detailed plan. The plan includes a stakeholder analysis, tactical step-by-step timeline, success factors that will be important to the change target’s success, communications, student feedback loop plan, and more.

Action #5: Launched Change Target & Started Implementing Change

Starting in December, RBI launched the Change Targets and started to implement the plans. Each month we will provide updates and highlight important wins.
